The National Cadet Corps (NCC)
has its genesis in the ‘University Corps’ which was created under the Indian Defence Act, 1917 with the object to make up the shortages of the Army. In 1920, when the Indian Territorial Act was passed, the University Corps was replaced by the University Training Corps (UTC). In 1942, the University Training Corps was renamed as the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC). In order to create a youth organization at the national level, a Committee was set up in 1946. Recommendations of this committee paved the way for the formation of NCC. The National Cadet Corps came into existence under the National Cadet Corps Act, 1948 under the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Since its inception, the National Cadet Corps has been actively engaged in the noble task of grooming the youth of our country physically and mentally into worthy citizens. NCC, the largest uniformed youth organization in the world, has over a period of time, carved a niche for itself as a unique organization in 'Nation Building' and grooming the youth of our country. NCC has spread to every corner of the country having more than 14 lakh cadets. The cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parade. During wars, the NCC has served as a second line of defence and took charge of Civil Defence in border area.
